How the words can alter the mindset

As we move further into the grips of Corona Virus with travel restrictions, bans on mass gatherings and self-isolation I am noticing the language change.

What was an outbreak of a contagious virus with health implications necessitating special measures, has now become the language of fighting. Both the USA and UK are referring to war and battles.

Phrases such as wartime mentality, war chest, comparisons to World War 2 and use of the words ‘siege’ and ‘fortress’ do little to help us find the compassion and empathy we need to build our immune systems and increase positive energy.

These words exacerbate the feeling that we have no control, that there is an enemy and that we must do everything we can to find comfort and protection even if it is harmful in the long run such as panic buying.

Maria’s Midweek Mindfulness

We’ve become so used to using words about fighting – remember the war on terror? – that I try to mindful about the use of this language.
