Before helping others

That famous line on an airplane about putting our own oxygen mask on before helping others has so many applications in life and none better than how you start your day.

On days when I get up and get straight to work, I know I am not in balance. So I learned to ensure that every morning I connect with myself first. This can be a minute or ten minutes but that check-in is a great way to test my inner compass:

Am I in touch with my body? Have I nourished myself? Is anything lacking or missing? What is my general state today? If anything is out of balance? I don’t need to solve it or divert from my intended plans, I just recognise that I might not be firing on all cylinders and adjust accordingly. That might mean not reacting to unexpected issues and taking time to reflect.

From that place we know what we have to give and the giving is authentic, real and genuine.

From that place, we can be in service of others to the extent of that which we can offer freely.

Stepping back, contextualizing and connecting to the bigger picture is the reward of checking in with myself regularly.
