Dialogue Road Map

This is a tool for getting past resistance, hostility, anger and violence in order to engage in a meaningful dialogue. It is the result of extensive research and practice by Maria Arpa at the Centre for Peaceful Solutions and has been developed over 20 years.

The Dialogue Road Map (DRM) has five main components. Listening is at the heart of the model. What is important is that, at all stages, there is a clearly defined listener and a clearly defined speaker although this does not need to be an overt assignment of roles. Any change to this status needs to be agreed using the DRM process. The intention is for all parties to the dialogue to be heard and understood in order to find change through choice.

The process is dynamic and works by understanding and using each component appropriately and actively to make progress in a conversation.

The DRM can be used by any person who is sufficiently trained and confident in its application with or without the other person’s knowledge. The DRM cannot be used without an understanding of the philosophy of nonviolence and needs-based theory. Without this grounding and sufficient skills training the DRM will be inadequate for its purpose and will not work.

Furthermore, the DRM is not a tool for manipulation or subtle coercion. It is designed to meet our human need for connection. It allows everyone participating to have a voice and a stake in the outcomes.
